Tethered and cannot view NEFs

Purchased full version last night. Using Dell XPS M1210 with the most recent NVIDIA drivers. JPGs read fine, but not so with NEFs. If I change camera (Nikon D3) from RAW (only) to JPG, tethered shots show up on-screen. When camera is set to RAW only, no images populate. Also, FPV does not view any RAW images in any folder.

Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

I intended to say that the NEF does transfer to the image folder...just does not view in FPV.

You need to install the Nikon NEF decoder in order to preview NEF files:

http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/

There are several other raw decoders available, you can find links on the following page:

http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/codecs.aspx

Finally, an up-to-date list of image formats supported by FastPictureViewer can be found here:

Axel,

Thank you for such quick a reply and fix. Everything works fine now. FPV is slower than Camera Control Pro 2, but now I have a backup capture on the CF card, which I like. I guess I am going to have to get faster cards now.

BTW, http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/ is a really slow download site. Does this codec exist anywhere else?

Thanks again.

Carroll

Yes the D3 writes the image to the memory card first, then notifies that a new picture was taken. As a result the memory card speed has an impact on the overall tethered shooting experience when using the standard MTP/PTP protocol. CCP2 probably uses a more direct technique to bypass the memory card writing.

You could perhaps try the RAW+JPG mode, perhaps with medium size jpegs. In my tests the jpeg image was transfered first of the two, and since it is relatively small the program will display the picture on screen quicker than if it has to wait for the big NEF to arrive. FPV Pro handles RAW+JPG seamlessly so it might be worth trying.

Thanks, Axel. I'll try that.
