Yep ExifTool and ExifToolGUI seem to be very capable in doing this. But even author of ExifTool suggests you should make backup of the original files - especially if you are editing RAW files.
So if a image management/viewer/editor software can support sidecar xmp files, could these files be used to have orientation info in them. For example if sidecar file contained orientation info it would override all exif orientation data - otherwise exif data was used? Just a thought from a non-programmer! =) So if you would use sidecars to add description, title etc. metadata, why not use them for orientation data also? That way you could leave original RAWs untouched.
